John Rothchild was a financial writer, cyclist, mountain climber, and expert on the state of Florida, where he resided for most of his life. He was educated at Yale, and was a Fulbright Scholar. His career began with editorial positions at the St. Petersberg Times, the Washington Post, and the Washington Monthly Magazine; he then embarked on a long career as a financial columnist, with Worth Magazine, Time Magazine, and finally Fortune Magazine. Other journalistic work was published in Esquire, GQ, Harper's, The New York Times Magazine, The New Republic, Rolling Stone, among others. He was a frequent guest on radio and television such as The Today Show, CNN, and NPR.
Rothchild authored or co-authored nine books, including the bestselling investing trilogy with mutual-fund superstar Peter Lynch: ONE UP ON WALL STREET, BEATING THE STREET, and LEARN TO EARN. The Lynch books have sold 4.5 million copies combined.
He died in 2019 at the age of 79.
